Schools First Impact Award
Congratulations Dubbo College Senior Campus
Western Student Connections is pleased to have partnered with Dubbo College Senior Campus and the Dubbo Business Community Partnership for their successful National Australia Bank, Schools First Impact Award application.
Dubbo College Senior Campus will receive $50,000 in recognition of their highly successful Get Real Program.
Western Student Connections prepared the application in consultation with the school.
The Dubbo Business Partnership is a business committee, set up in 2005, which acts as an advisory body with a commitment to ensure Dubbo students are assisted in obtaining skills and attitudes necessary to fully participate in the workforce when they complete their education. Members are senior managers of local businesses: Fletcher International Exports, Frank Cross Tyres, Newtown Providores, Daily Liberal, Bridgewater Signs, Dubbo City Council, Dubbo Chamber of Commerce. The group fully supports the school’s Get Real Program, actively encourages other employers to support students, provides regular work placement positions, training and advice for students and promotes the program in the community. They ensure resources from the community are available to the school, including employment, work experience and work placement positions, workplace tours, access to trades people and professionals as career coaches and mentors, guest appearances, visits to classes as guest speakers and being available to participate in careers activities.
The Get Real Program provides an holistic approach to solving problems with student engagement, attendance, retention and employability. Early in Year 10, students sign a pledge at a ceremony attended by parents, community and business representatives. The Pledge Board is mounted in the school hall as a reminder and students participate in programs throughout the year to encourage them to meet their commitment.
The pledge is "I willingly commit myself to participate in the Get Real Program and undertake that by my 17th birthday, I will be in full time education in school or TAFE, be undertaking industry training or be in full time employment".
